Squirrels are amazing, resourceful, entertaining, pesky, determined and beautiful creatures. They come in all colors including grey, brown, reddish to jet black. The ones we see in our area of Virginia are grey. They are extremely entertaining especially the determination they show in getting bird seed out of a bird feeder. They will use whatever means necessary to secure food from the bird feeder. This is the essance and key to their ability to survive today as well as in times past. The bird feeder example is only one example, the squirrels determination is it's greatest asset. If you couple this determination with it's incredible climbing skills, speed, agility, it is truly the most entertaining animal most of us have a chance to observe. They coexist side by side with the birds in a very harmonious natural way that makes every view outside your window one of wonderment.
Black Squirrels I have only seen the black squirrels once and that was when we were on the Canadian Side of the Niagara Falls. They were gorgeous with their jet black huge coat. The Black Squirrels we observed were much bigger, with what looked like a much thicker and softer coat than the grey squirrels we see around our home in Virginia. As cold as it gets off Lake Erie in the winter the black squirrel in the white snow must be an incredible sight. I have had people tell me the black squirrel is also found as far south as Delaware however I have never witnessed them anywhere but Canada.
