Raccoons are a small furry animal with a unique markings around their eyes and tail. They are surprising related Pandas. They normally range in length but average about 32" long from nose to end of tail and weigh about 20-25 pounds. Their body is covered with long course hair and have black lips. The tail is bushy with grayish-white color with black rings. The body is usually a darker brownish color with the underside a paler brown. Raccoons are good tree climbers and use that ability as a defense mechanism. The face of a raccoon can sometimes be confused as a fox, while the face especially with the eyes in black surrounded by white gives the raccoon a mischievous look. Raccoons are unique in that they can only be found in North and South America. Raccoons can live in hollowed trees, rocky ledges, or any area that offers protections. Like a bear Raccoons will eat almost anything, frogs, crayfish, turtles, and other fresh water animals. They prefer to wash their food before they eat it. Raccoons worst habit is raiding birds nests, chicken coops, or as we all know trashcans. Raccoons normally have between 3-6 babies at a time usually in April or May. Just like a puppy they are blind at birth and cry when they want food often sounding similar to a human baby cry. Raccoons are known for their long legs, strong claws and special raccoon look. Raccoons have been used for food primarily in regions where hunting was necessary for subsistence. In earlier Colonial Times in the USA Raccoon "coonskin hats", coats, were part of the fashion of the day. During the political times of 1838-1844 raccoons were the emblem of the "Whig Party" in the United States. The famous log cabins of the Harrison and Tyler political campaigns had coonskin nailed to the outside to designate them as belonging to the Whig Party.
